Procedure
To a solution of 1-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-carboxylic acid (500 mg, 3.57 mmol, commercially available from e.g. Sigma-Aldrich), N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-N′-ethylcarbodiimide (554 mg, 3.57 mmol) and 1-H-1,2,3-benzotriazol-1-ol (54.6 mg, 0.357 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 ml) pre-stirred for 30 mins under argon at room temp was added solid t-butyl carbazate (722 mg, 5.35 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at RT for 18 h. The reaction mixture was partitioned between dichloromethane (˜50 ml) and saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (˜50 ml). The aqueous phase was extracted with dichloromethane (2×25 ml) and the combined organic extracts washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (˜25 ml), dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated in vacuo to give the crude product as a yellow oil.
