PROCEDURE

A solution of (S)—(S)-3-oxiranylpyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid t-butyl ester (1.1 g, 4.9 mmol, 1.0 eq.), sodium azide (800 mg, 12.3 mmol, 2.5 eq.), and ammonium chloride (474 mg, 8.9 mmol) in MeOH (25 mL) was stirred at reflux overnight. The white solid residue obtained on removal of solvent was dissolved in EtOAc (25 mL) and washed with water and saturated aqueous NaCl (1×25 mL each). The organic layer was then dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to yield (S)-3-((S)-2-azido-1-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid t-butyl ester (1.3 g).
