Procedure

A mixture of methyl (6-ethyl-2,4-dioxo-1,4-dihydrothieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-3(2H)-yl)acetate (3.7 g), 4′-(bromomethyl)biphenyl-2-carbonitrile (4.3 g), potassium carbonate (3.6 g) and acetonitrile (200 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 2 hr. Insoluble material was filtered off, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration, washed with water and diethyl ether, and dried under reduced pressure to give the title compound as a colorless solid (3.4 g, 57%).
