Procedure

To a solution of 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (2.482 g, 20.00 mmol) in a mixed solvent (20 mL of methylene chloride nd 10 mL of i-propanol) at rt, was added 1,4-phenylenedimethanamine (1.362 g, 10 mmol, Aldrich). The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 5 h. To this mixture, sodium borohydride (0.567 g, 15.0 mmol, 1.5 eq) was added, and it was stirred at rt overnight. The reaction mixture was quenched by adding 10 mL of MeOH and 10 mL of aq. NaHCO3. The reaction mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried, concentrated and purified by ISCO system, eluting with CH2Cl2/EtOAc to give the title compound (2.45 g, 66%) as a viscous material, MS (ESI): 353.1 (M+H)+.
