To a solution of the compound bis(1-ethyl-2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinolin-7-yl)phosphinic acid (4.22 g, 9.1 mmol) (Example 5) in methanol (100 mL), was added platinum (0.42 g, 5 wt. % on activated carbon). The mixture was stirred under hydrogen (50 psi) for 5 hours. The mixture was filtered through a pad of celite and then evaporated to dryness to give white solid (4.09 g, 96% yield).
