Procedure

A solution of methyl 2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-methyl-6-(methylsulfonyloxy)cyclohexanecarboxylate (185 mg) in benzene (5 mL) was stirred at rt and treated with DBU (131 μL). The mixture was heated to 60° C. and stirred for 36 h. The cooled mixture was treated with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and saturated aqueous sodium chloride, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum to provide methyl 6-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-6-methylcyclohex-1-enecarboxylate (142 mg). Mass spectrum m/z 321.12 (M+Na+).
