Procedure

To 3 L (liters) of water, 3 L of ethanol and 100 mL (milli-liter) of aqueous 37% concentrated hydrochloric acid were added, and then, 585 g (1.1 mol) of N-methyldioleylamine was added to the thus-mixed liquid. The mixed liquid was heated to 60° C. to give a solution of N-methyldioleylamine hydrochloride. To this solution, 1 kg of hectorite was added. The obtained slurry was stirred at 60° C. for 3 hours, and a supernatant was removed from the slurry. Then the slurry was washed with 50 L of water at 60° C., and then, dried at 60° C. and a pressure of 10−3 torr for 24 hours. The dried product was pulverized by a jet mill to give modified hectorite having an average particle diameter of 10.5 μm.
