Trifluoroacetic acid (613 mg, 5.38 mmol) was added dropwise to a 0° C. solution of ethyl 4-(cyclobutyl(hydroxy)methyl)benzoate (700 mg, 3 mmol) in dichloromethane (10 mL). Then Dess-Martin periodinane (2.03 g, 4.78 mmol) was added and the reaction was warmed to room temperature and stirred for 2 hours. The reaction was quenched with 1 N aqueous sodium hydrosulfite (10 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 mL). The combined organics were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated. Purification by flash column chromatography gave ethyl 4-(cyclobutanecarbonyl)benzoate (540 mg, 78%) as an oil. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, δ): 8.04 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 2H), 7.86 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 2 H), 4.33 (q, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 3.90-3.99 (m, 1H), 2.20-2.40 (m, 4H), 2.00-2.09 (m, 1H), 1.81-1.90 (m, 1H), 1.34 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
