Methyl 2,6-dimethyl-4-trifluoromethylpyridine-3-carboxylate (23.30 g, 99.9 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (50 mL), followed by the addition of 5 mol/L aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide (50 mL, 250 mmol). The mixture was subjected to heating under reflux for 2 days. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool down to room temperature, and concentrated hydrochloric acid (15 mL) was added and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was azeotropically distilled three times with ethanol and toluene. The residue was suspended in ethanol under heat, and subsequent to filtration, the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was azeotropically distilled twice with toluene, and subsequent to the addition of ether, the reaction product was collected by filtration to obtain the title compound (25.24 g, 99%) as a colorless powder.
