Procedure
A solution of (2R)-2-amino-2-phenylethanol (148 g, 1.08 mol) and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde (147 g, 1.08 mol) in toluene (2 L) was heated at reflux to remove water by Dean-Stark trap for 3 hr. The mixture was concentrated and the residue was dried which gave the title compound XIa (265 g, 96%) as a white solid, which was used for next reaction without further purification.
