Procedure
A solution of diethyl 2-methyl-2-(4-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)phenyl)malonate (3.50 g, 10.0 mmol) in conc. HCl (20 ml) was stirred for 18 h at reflux in a sealed tube. The reaction mixture was concentrated and co-distilled with toluene to afford (1.7 g, 70%) of 2-(4-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)phenyl)propanoic acid as dark brown solid.
