Procedure

To a suspension of [1]benzothieno[3,2-c]pyridin-1(2H)-one in AcOH (0.52 M) was added Br2 (1.1 equiv) at room temperature. The mixture was heated to reflux for 1.5 h, cooled to room temperature, poured into H2O and stirred for 30 min. The mixture was filtered and washed with H2O to give the title compound.
