A solution of 7-bromo-1-[(4-methoxybenzyl)amino][1]benzothieno[3,2-c]pyridine-4-carbonitrile in conc. H2SO4 (0.04 M) was stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The mixture was poured into H2O, neutralized with K3PO4, filtered, washed with H2O and dried. The crude product was swished with MeOH to give the title compound.
