Procedure
Simple aliphatic alcohols such as 1-butanol and 2-butanol underwent little or no oxidation, even when heated at 100° C. (Entries 18 and 19). This observed selectivity for activated alcohols was confirmed by oxidation of a mixture of 4-methoxybenzylic alcohol (5 mmol) and 1-octanol (5 mmol), which resulted in complete oxidation of the benzylic alcohol with no formation of 1-octanal.
