Procedure

19 g (54 mmol) of the N-(1-methyl-2-methoxyethyl)-2-methyl-4-(4'-ethoxycarbonylbutoxy)-6-ethylaniline prepared in stage 4 are mixed at room temperature with 150 ml of 2M potassium hydroxide solution. The resulting emulsion is left to react to completion by stirring at room temperature for about 20 hours. The reaction mixture is then adjusted to pH 7 with hydrochloric acid and extracted twice with diethyl ether. The ether phases are combined, washed several times with saturated brine, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. Yield 12.9 g (73.9% of theory)nD23 1.517, viscous oil.
