Procedure

2-(1-Hydroxy-2-methanesulfonyloxyethyl)-5-methyl-2,3,6,7-tetrahydrofuro[2,3-f]quinoline-7-one (1.66 g, 4.90 mmol) was dissolved in dimethylformamide (50 ml). Sodium azide (1.91 g, 29.4 mmol) was added to the mixture, and the mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 2.5 hours. The reaction mixture was condensed under reduced pressure, and the residue was extracted from chloroform-water. The organic phase was dried over sodium sulfate, and condensed under reduced pressure. The resultant residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent=chloroform: methanol=10:1) to obtain 1.19 g of the title compound as pale yellow powdery crystals (85.0%).
