Procedure
The quinine salt was suspended in 180 mL of ethyl acetate and the suspension was washed with 1N hydrochloric acid (2×92 mL). The mixture was then dried (NaSO4), filtered and concentrated. The residue was dissolved in hexane and crystallized to give (S)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthoic acid (14.27 g 0.08 mol), m.p. 54°-56° C. [α]D -62.76° (c=1.0165, benzene).
