Procedure

1-(2-Cyanoethyl)-2-methyl-3-(3-pyridylmethyl)indole (1.0 g) was dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid (10 ml) and the solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 24 hours. The solution was cautiously basified by addition of dilute KOH solution with cooling to give an oil which gradually solidified. The solid was filtered off, washed with water and crystallised from isopropanol/water to give 1-carbamoylethyl)-2-methyl-3-(3-pyridylmethyl)indole (0.44 g), m.p. 145°147°.
