Procedure
23.81 g (0.1 mol) of 3,5-dinitrophthalic anhydride are dissolved under reflux in 150 ml of xylene. The mixture is cooled to 105° C. and 7.31 g (0.1 mol) of n-butylamine in 10 ml of xylene are added dropwise, with vigorous stirring. On warming slowly to the reflux temperature, the amic acid which has precipitated out is converted to the soluble product, partly with vigorous foaming. After refluxing for 30 minutes under a water separator, the mixture is cooled and filtered and the mother liquor is evaporated. After recrystallisation from methylene chloride/diethyl ether/n-pentane, 27.53 g (94% of theory) of 3,5-dinitrophthalic acid N-n-butylimide, with a melting point of 40°-42° C., are obtained.
