Ethyl 4-oxo-5-phenyl-4H-pyran-2-carboxylate (4.9 g) was heated with concentrated hydrochloric acid (12 ml) on a steam bath for 11/2 hours. The mixture was cooled and the solid title product was recrystallised from ethyl acetate-dimethylformamide (mp 225°-227° C. with decomposition).
