To a solution (300 ml) of 6-(11-acetoxy-1-oxoundecyl)-2,3-dimethoxy-5-methylphenol (34 g) in methanol is added sodium hydroxide (7 g), and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. After 5 N hydrochloric acid is added to the reaction mixture to neutralize, the solvent is distilled off to give crude crystals. The product is washed with water and recrystallized from ether-hexane (1:1) to give colorless needles of 6-(11-hydroxy-1-oxoundecyl)-2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-phenol (30 g). m.p. 81° C.
