To a stirred mixture of 68.5 g of the disodium salt of 2,2-bis(3-allyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, 250 ml of toluene, and 0.12 g of 2,6-di-tert. butyl-p-cresol was added dropwise over 1 hour 40.3 g of methacryloyl chloride, the temperature of the mixture being kept below 45° during the addition. After the mixture had been stirred for a further 21/2 hours, it was filtered and the filtrate was freed of solvent by subjecting it to vacuum (water pump) and then high vacuum. There remained in practically quantitative yield the desired product, having theformula ##STR18##as a nearly colourless liquid of viscosity 3.6 Pa-s.
