Procedure
A mixture of 3.8 g (0.01 mol) of bis(4-acetoxyphenyl)phenylphosphine, 1.7 g (0.01 mol) of α-bromotoluene and 15 ml of 1,1,1-trichloroethane was heated to reflux at which time complete solution was achieved. Shortly thereafter, product began to precipitate from solution. After heating at reflux for 2.5 hr, the mixture was cooled, filtered and the solid was washed with ether and dried. The yield of benzylbis(4-acetoxyphenyl)phenylphosphonium bromide was 5.0 g (90.0% of theory); mp=233°-5° C.
