According to the process described in paragraph (b) of Example 1, from ethyl (R/S)-2-(3-hydroxy-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidinyl)propionate there is obtained, after chromatographic filtration on silica gel (granular size 0.2-0.5 mm), elution with acetonitrile/ethanol (1:1) and crystallization from acetonitrile, (R/S)-2-(3-hydroxy-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidinyl)propionamide of melting point 139°-141°.
