A solution of 2-propyl-6-methylisonicotinic acid ethyl ester (2.30 g, 11.0 mmol) in 6 N aq. HCl (40 mL) is stirred at 65° C. for 24 h before it is cooled to rt and extracted with diethyl ether (2×50 mL). The aq. phase is evaporated and the residue is dried under HV to give 2-propyl-6-methylisonicotinic acid hydrochloride (2.0 g) as a colourless solid, LC-MS: tR=0.44 min; [M+1]+=180.09; 1H NMR (D6-DMSO): δ 8.02 (s, 1H), 7.99 (s, 1H), 3.04 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 2H), 2.78 (s, 3H), 1.82-1.72 (m, 2H), 0.93 (t, J=7.3 Hz, 3H).
