To a solution of 2-(tert-butyl)phenol (21.0 g, 140 mmol) and propargyl bromide (18.8 mL, 168 mmol) in acetonitrile (250 mL) was added potassium carbonate (23.3 g, 168 mmol). The reaction was stirred at ambient temperature for two days. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (50 mL) and extracted diethyl ether (2×150 mL). The combined organic extracts were concentrated to provide 23.7 g (90%) of the title compound which was used without further purification. 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 7.26-7.14 (m, 2H), 7.02 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.94-6.86 (m, 1H), 4.83 (d, J=2.4 Hz, 2H), 3.55 (t, J=2.4 Hz, 1H), 1.34 (s, 9H).
