To a solution of 3,5-bis-trifluoromethyl benzaldehyde (0.185 g, 0.76 mmol) in MeOH (3 mL) was added (3-aminomethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-quinoline-2-yl)-cyclopentylmethyl-ethylamine (0.2 g, 0.69 mmol), followed by the addition of acetic acid (0.08 mL, 1.39 mmol). This reaction mixture was stirred at RT for 1 h, after which time sodium cyanoborohydride (0.172 g, 2.78 mmol) was added, and stirring was continued for another 8 h. The solvent was then evaporated under vacuum and water was added, followed by extraction of the product with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium bisulfite solution, the organic layer was separated and dried over sodium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated to give the {3-[(3,5-bis-trifluoromethyl-benzylamino)-methyl]-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-quinolin-2-yl}-cyclopentylmethyl-ethylamine (0.250 g, yield: 70%).
