Ethynylmagnesium bromide 0.5 M in THF (23.89 mL, 11.94 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of rac-[1-(3-bromo-phenyl)-1-methyl-2-oxo-ethyl]-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (1.96 g, 5.97 mmol) in THF (60 mL) at 0° C. under nitrogen. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 15 minutes and at room temperature for 30 minutes. The mixture was diluted with NH4Cl (aq. sat. solution) and extracted with DCM. The organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4), filtered and the solvents evaporated in vacuo to yield rac-[1-(3-bromo-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-1-methyl-but-3-ynyl]-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (2.11 g, 99% yield) as an oil, which was used in the next step without further purification.
