To a solution of cis-2-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino-1-(4-nitrobenzoyloxy)cyclopentane (3.70 g) in a mixture methanol/water 1:1 (20 mL) at room temperature, potassium carbonate (2.37 g) was added and stirred overnight. Water was added and the mixture extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic layers were separated, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to dryness to give cis-2-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)aminocyclopentan-1-ol (1.94 g, 91%). 1H-NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6, ppm from TMS): δ 6.09 (1H, d), 4.54 (1H, bb), 3.86 (1H, m), 3.53 (1H, m), 1.30-1.80 (6H, m), 1.37 (9H, s).
