Procedure

A mixture of benzyl 2-(4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylthio)ethylcarbamate (29) (300 mg), paraformaldehyde (300 g), p-toluenesulfonic acid (100 g) in benzene (15 mL) was stirred at 80° C. for 3 days. The reaction mixture was filtered and washed with sat. NaHCO3 (2×5 mL). Removal of the solvent gave 30 as white solid. The product was purified by chromatography on SiO2 (petroleum ether/EtOAc=3/1). Yield: 235 mg, 76%.
