Procedure
2-chloroethanol (34.8 g, 43.2 mmol) and boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (0.136 mL, 1.08 mmol) were dissolved in 20 mL of THF and cooled in an ice bath. (R)-(−)-epichlorohydrin (10.0 g, 10.8 mmol) in 10 mL of THF was added slowly through a syringe. After the addition, the ice bath was removed and the mixture was heated in a 45° C. oil bath for 90 min at which time the reaction was complete. The reaction was concentrated in vacuo to give an oily crude product (R)-1-chloro-3-(2-chloroethoxy)propan-2-ol (2I, 16.2 g, 86.6% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CHLOROFORM-d) δ ppm 3.56-3.71 (m, 6H) 3.85-3.92 (m, 3H).
