Procedure

40 g (0.24 mol) 2-hydroxyethyl cysteine was placed in a 1000 ml flask, to which was added 550 ml concentrated hydrochloric acid, followed by reflux for 7 h. After completion of the reflux, the reaction mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature to separate out white crystal, which was filtered and dried obtaining 41.6 g of a white crystal product, yield 93.8%.
