Procedure

Ethyl 2-[3-(3-bromophenyl)oxetan-3-yl]acetate (1.5 g, 4.513 mmol) was dissolved in MeOH (25 mL) and cooled to 0° C. NaOH (9.026 mL of 1 M, 9.026 mmol) was added and the reaction allowed to warm to rt overnight. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the solution neutralised with 2 eq of HCl (1M soln, 9.026 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organics were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to give 2-[3-(3-bromophenyl)oxetan-3-yl]acetic acid as a viscous yellow oil (1.287 g, 95%).
