A mixture of 3-(6-methoxy-2-methylpyridin-3-yl)benzonitrile (3.00 g, 13.4 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (2.89 g, 16.08 mmol) and methanol (150 mL) is stirred 66 hr at room temperature. The solids are collected by filtration to give 3-(5-bromo-6-methoxy-2-methylpyridin-3-yl)benzonitrile (1.20 g, 30%) as a white solid. LC/MS RT 4.19 min; MS m/e=303/305 (M); NMR (CDCl3) 7.65 (2H, m), 7.60 (1H, s), 7.56 (2H, m), 4.02 (3H, s), 2.37 (3H, s).
