BF3 etherate (1.35 mL, 10.6 mmol) was added to a solution of benzyl 7-(diethoxyphosphoryl)-3,7-diazabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane-3-carboxylate (1.96 g, 5.32 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) at 0° C. and stirred at 0° C. for 2 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo, ethyl acetate (30 mL) and saturated sodium bicarbonate (20 mL) were added. The organic layer was separated, dried (sodium sulfate) and concentrated in vacuo to give trans-benzyl 3-(diethoxyphosphorylamino)-4-methoxypiperidine-1-carboxylate (2.00 g, 94%) as an oil.
