To a stirred, cold (0° C.) solution of 7.0 grams (0.046 mole) of 4-fluoroindanylamine (known compound) and 5.7 grams (0.056 mole) of triethylamine in 100 mL of methylene chloride was added 5.4 grams (0.051 mole) of 2-chloroethyl isocyanate. The cold reaction mixture was stirred for three hours at which time it was filtered. The filter cake was rinsed with methylene chloride. The filtrates were combined and concentrated under reduced pressure to a residue. The residue was triturated with hexanes and the mixture filtered. The filter cake was dried under reduced pressure to yield 4.0 grams of [(2-chloroethyl)amino]-N-(4-fluoroindanyl)carboxamide. The NMR spectrum was consistent with the proposed structure.
