Procedure

2-(3-Fluoro-4-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid (1.0 g, 5.88 mmol) was diluted with THF:MeOH (3:1) (10 mL) followed by the addition of TMSCHN2 (5.88 ml, 11.8 mmol). After stiffing for 1 hour, the reaction was quenched with 2N HCl and diluted with DCM. The layers were separated and the organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated. The material was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with hexanes:ethyl acetate (2:1) to yield methyl 2-(3-fluoro-4-hydroxyphenyl)acetate (700 mg, 64.7% yield) as a clear oil.
