Procedure

A solution of 1.58 g (5.1 mmol) of 1-cyclopropyl-3-(3-methylamino-2-methyl-4-methylsulfonylphenyl)propane-1,3-dione and 2.0 ml (15.3 mmol) of N,N-dimethyl formamide dimethyl acetal was stirred for 3 h at RT. The mixture was treated with 10 ml of CH2Cl2, stirred for 2 h at an oil-bath temperature of 50° C., left to stand overnight, stirred for 1 d at an oil-bath temperature of 50° C., and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel. This gave 0.85 g of product in 93% purity.
