Procedure

The compound obtained in Process 1 (2.5 g) was oxidized with SO3 -pyridine complex in DMSO in the presence of triethylarnine to yield 1-oxo-4-phenyl-1H-2-benzopyran-3-carboxaldehyde as colorless crystals (2.38 g).
