Procedure

A mixture of 4-(6-methoxy-indan-1-yl)piperidine (8.4 g, 36.4 mmol) and L-tartaric acid (2.7 g, 18.2 mmol) was dissolved in 150 mL ethanol-water (10:1). After standing for 5 h the precipitate was collected and recrystallized from 50 mL ethanol-water (10:1) to give of (+)-4-(6-methoxy-indan-1-yl)piperidine L-tartrate (2.0 g, 18%), mp 183°-184° C., [α]=53.4°. Anal. Calc'd for C15H21NO2 ·C4H6O6 : C, 59.83%; H, 7.14%; N, 3.68%. Found: C, 59.83%; H, 7.21%; N, 3.66%. A sample of the hydrochloride was prepared in ethanol, mp 168°-169° C., [α]=57.2°. Anal. Calc'd for C15H21NO2 ·HCl: C, 67.28%; H, 8.28%; N, 5.23%. Found: C, 67.20%; H, 8.30%; N, 5.11%.
