Procedure
Hydrazine hydrate (3.06 mL, 63.0 mmol) was added to 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(2-fluoropyridin-3-yl)ethanone (1.9 g, 9.0 mmol) in absolute ethanol (50 mL), and the mixture was heated to reflux overnight. The cooled reaction mixture was evaporated to afford a solid, which was partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer was extracted with another portion of ethyl acetate. The combined ethyl acetate extracts were washed twice with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated to yield 3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine (1.43 g, 85%) as a solid.
