Procedure
A mixture of N-(5-nitro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-3-yl)acetamide (530 mg, 2.40 mmol), EtOH (2.4 mL, 1M) and concentrated HCl (37%) (2.5 mL, 68.6 mmol) was heated to 85° C. for 3 hours. The volatiles were removed to afford 5-nitro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-3-amine hydrochloride (500 mg, 97% yield) as a solid.
