A mixture of [5-fluoro-2-methyl-3-(2-sulfobenzyl)indol-1-yl]acetic acid methyl ester (0.30 g) and dichloromethane (1.5 mL) was treated portion wise with phosphorus pentachloride (0.15 g), followed by N,N-dimethylformamide (0.070 mL), and the resulting mixture was heated at reflux overnight. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, concentrated under reduced pressure and diluted with dichloromethane. The mixture was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel, eluting with dichloromethane to afford the title compound as a yellow solid (1.3 g).
