To a solution of 2-thioxo-2,3-dihydrobenzothiazole-5-carbonitrile (260 mg, 1.35 mmol) in EtOH (10.8 mL) was added Et3N (137 mg, 1.35 mmol) and methyliodide (192 mg, 1.35 mmol). The mixture was heated at reflux for 1 h. The volatiles were evaporated and the residue was extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×10 mL). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to give 2-methylsulfanylbenzothiazole-5-carbonitrile 271 mg (97%).
