Procedure

A mixture of methyl 2-acetyl-6-nitrobenzoate (2 g, 8.96 mmol) and 33% methylamine in ethanol (10 mL) was stirred at reflux for 14 h. The solvents were removed under reduced pressure to afford 1.7 g of the desired product (yield: 85%). 1H NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz): δ=1.80 (s, 3H), 3.05 (s, 3H), 7.78 (m, 2H), 7.95 (m, 1H).
