The crude aldehyde was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (40 mL) and 2-methyl-2-propanesulfinamide (1.81 g, 14.9 mmol, 1.1 eq.) and titanium(IV) ethoxide (4.27 mL, 20.3 mmol, 1.5 eq.) were added. The resulting mixture was stirred for 5 h under reflux and 16 h at room temperature, before being treated with water (10 mL) and filtered through celite. The filter cake was washed with ethyl acetate, the aqueous layer was separated and extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were dried over magnesium sulphate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography (SiO2, 0%→100% ethyl acetate in heptane) to yield 1.90 g of the title compound (19). Rt=1.58 min (Method B). Detected mass: 328.3 (M+H+).
