Procedure

8-isocyanato-8-(thiophen-2-yl)-1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]decane (4 g) was dissolved in dry THF (140 ml) and the solution was cooled to 0°-10° C. LAH (4 g) was added in portions over a period of 30 minutes and the reaction mixture was heated for a further 30 minutes at 60° C. The mixture was cooled to 0°-10° C. and saturated ammonium chloride solution (100 ml) was added. The mixture was now filtered through celite and washed with ethyl acetate (3×150 ml). After removing the solvents the crude product was taken up in ethyl acetate (200 ml) and stirred for 3 minutes at 0°-10° C. The ethyl acetate phase was separated, and aqueous phase was made alkaline (pH 10-14) with saturated NaOH solution and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×200 ml). The combined organic phases were dried over Na2SO4. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure.
