A solution of 8-dimethylamino-1,4-dioxa-spiro[4.5]decane-8-carbonitrile (9.68 g, 46 mmole) in absolute THF (30 ml) was added dropwise while cooling with ice. A viscous precipitate thereby formed, and 100 ml of absolute THF was therefore added to achieve a better mixing. The mixture was stirred for 24 hours at room temperature. 20% NH4Cl solution (100 ml) and water (120 ml) were added while cooling with ice to the reaction mixture, and the organic phase was separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with ether (3×120 ml).
