Procedure

235 mg (60% in mineral oil, 5.89 mmol) sodium hydride were added to a solution of 1.7 g (5.36 mmol) 3-(2-acetyl-5-(trifluoromethyl)phenylamino)-3-oxopropanoic acid ethyl ester in EtOH (16 ml) and the mixture was refluxed for 3 h and stirred for a further 16 h at RT. Then 1.34 ml (6.70 mmol) AcOH were added and the mixture was diluted with EE (30 ml) and brine (10 ml). The phases were separated and the organic phase was dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to small volume under vacuum. Crystallisation (EE) of the residue yielded 920 mg (3.07 mmol, 57%) 2-hydroxy-4-methyl-7-(trifluoromethyl)quinoline-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester.
