A solution of 5-[2-(3-hydroxy-phenyl)-ethyl-carbamoyl]-3-methyl-thiophene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (260 mg, 0.81 mmol) in THF/water (8 ml/4 ml) was treated with LiOH.H2O (171 mg, 4.1 mmol) at 40° C. for 1.5 h. The reaction mixture was quenched with 1N HCl and extracted with EtOAc. The layers were separated. The organic layer was washed with brine, then dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the desired product (172 mg, 70% yield).
